HUNTINGTON BEACH – The Surf City Marathon returned to the seaside streets of Huntington Beach this morning as an estimated 40,000 people took advantage of the clear skies and cool ocean breeze to cheer on more than 20,000 runners.

With races including a 26.2-mile full marathon, a half-marathon and a 5K run, the 14th annual marathon drew competitors of all ages and skill levels, from seasoned runners taking part in the yearly marathon circuit to first-time participants barely into their teen years.

The marathon has become both a local favorite and a national draw for Huntington Beach, with this year's event bringing participants from all 50 states and 13 foreign countries.

"You're not just a spectator, you are a part of it," said Matt Wiltse, a Las Vegas resident who took first place among male marathon runners. "It's definitely a special experience. It's about seeing and testing your limits."

For some, the race was a particularly emotional experience.

Seal Beach resident Bobbie Doyle used the marathon to raise attention for a new nonprofit she established in the memory of her baby girl Evelyn, who died last August from a rare form of cancer four months after she was born.

Given her background as an endurance athlete, Doyle decided that marathons were the best way to both deal with her loss and to help raise money and support for other families facing similar situations.

"I think of Evelyn and all the things she went through and it makes me run harder," Doyle said, adding, "People along the way, they stop and share their stories. They aren't necessarily athletes; they are out here to support their causes."
